Confidence is one of the sexiest qualities a person can have. People who are truly confident in themselves have the ability to create an atmosphere of security for others, be sure of themselves when making decisions, and speak from a place of promise.  They do this by embracing their unique qualities, being highly self aware, and trusting of their decision making abilities. Fortunately, if you suffer from low confidence it is not something you are born with rather it is something you can develop.

Yoga is an excellent way to develop more self confidence through your mind, body, and spirit.

Mind

Anything we want to accomplish must first start with the mind. Mindset is everything. Our minds control our thoughts that manifest into our actions. However, our emotions have the power to control our minds once we are able to understand them. The beauty of yoga is that it requires mindfulness to effectively achieve the poses using the breath as guidance. For example, when trying to get into tree pose we must send a signal to engage our muscles in order to have the stability needed for the pose. In order to maintain balance in the pose, you must keep your focus on a single point in the room. This requires concentration of the mind. Once your break your focal point and concentration, you will begin to feel unstable and fall out of the pose.


The same can hold true for confidence. Confidence starts with the mind and is a consistent conscious effort. Being confident releases the energy you need to achieve the goals you set for yourself. It also washes away any doubt or fear you might have. Over time, confidence will become more of a habit and your behavior will demonstrate that.

Body

Like with any health initiative, starting a yoga regimen will help to make improvements on your physique. At first, it will be challenging as you attempt to contort your body in positions you have not previously done but over time you will begin to see improvements in your posture, alignment, flexibility, and strength. As your posture improves so will your body language. A confident posture reflects a confident demeanor to others who will begin to perceive you in that way.

One of the best things is seeing the evolution of your practice from beginner to intermediate to advanced. It is the consistent practice that helps the body feel more confident in achieving the more challenging poses. The greatest boost of confidence I have ever experienced has been when doing yoga and achieving a pose that I have been struggling with for the a while. The mind body connection grows stronger and you begin to realize that our bodies are a vehicle for the mind.

Spirit

Yoga is a journey to self awareness and self  improvement. Throughout your practice, you will learn to become more self aware, humble, understanding, and compassionate with yourself. The more you learn about yourself the more you realize what you are and are not willing to stand for. In turn, you will begin to make decisions that are for your benefit which will lead to a happier and more confident self.

My yoga journey has taught me how to set goals for myself and work toward achieving them. As with anything, whenever we finally achieve a goal we feel like we are on top of the world and can do anything. It is a moment of self awareness and assurance that we are capable of achieving anything we put our minds to even if it takes longer than expected. It is the consistent practice and determination to ourselves that leads to the results we are looking to achieve. It is the achievement that gives us the satisfaction and confidence to continue to develop goals.
