Karma Series: The Law of Connection

Karma Series: The Law of Connection - ILYNSI Yoga - Street art - hands holding strings

The law of connection states that the past, present, and future are all connected. This means that everything that occurs in the universe is connected to a string of choices, people, and events that have a purpose in creation. The trees, the air, the water, and all living creatures are part of a global ecosystem where everything we do to ourselves impacts the experiences of others around us.

“We are all connected; to each other, biologically. To the earth, chemically. To the rest of the universe atomically. We are not figuratively, but literally stardust.” ~ Neil DeGrasse Tyson

We are all connected. The quote above really struck me while reading it. I started thinking about myself and where I fit in this world as many of us do during various stages of our lives. I realized how much I changed over the years as well as how I actually become more of who I truly am. For example, my outlook on life has changed a lot since I have changed my diet to pescatarian. I have always been intellectually curious and mindful of my surroundings but I was never really an animal person. I never wished harm on animals but at the same time I was not overly distraught by their treatment in the food industry.  Over the past few years, I have reflected deeply over the food pyramid. I developed a strong compassion for animals and now feel a connection towards all living creatures. Changing my diet made me change my perspective on life and the interconnectedness of all things in this world. I also began to see myself in all things. I have a heartbeat and so do the cows, I love my family and so do the people on the other side of the world, I have opinions and so do my neighbors. As I continue to develop throughout my human experience I learn more about myself as a piece of the whole.

“When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world.” –  John Muir

Everything is a choice. Everything we experience in this life is due to a single or collection of choices that bring us to the current state. Our choices not only affect us but also impact the lives of others. Even if something we do seems inconsequential, it is very important that we learn to see the bigger picture of our actions so we can learn to make better decisions. Although there are experiences that happen in our lives that are beyond our control, how we choose to respond is a choice. Maturity is understanding that choice is our power and how we choose to exercise it is our responsibility.

“We are like islands in the sea, separate on the surface but connected in the deep.” – William James

Learn to make decisions. This has always been a struggle for me. I have always been more indecisive than decisive in life from selecting and entree on the menu to deciding where I want to live. Over the years, I have realized the importance of learning how to make decisions and not going back on them. In life, we will only get to where we want to be by making decisions and prioritizing one thing over another. For some of us, making decisions can be difficult perhaps because we are not sure what the results might be and we do not want to be held responsible. I always find it helpful to write things down so I can organize my thoughts. Once I have a clearer understanding of my options and fears I can make a decision that is best for me.

“Waiting hurts. Forgetting hurts. But not knowing which decision to take can sometimes be the most painful...”― José N. Harris

Live in the present but plan for the future. Take a moment and think about your current situation. Are you content? Whatever your answer, take another moment and think back to the choices that led you to where you are today? Could you have done things differently? Would you have done things differently? Now put yourself in the future, five, ten, even twenty years from now. Where do you see yourself? Where do you want to be?

None of us know what our lives will look like. Some of us are impulsive and some of us really calculated in the choices we make everyday. However, the choices we make today will affect our experiences tomorrow. Set goals for yourself and work towards them every single day. The only time we have is now.

“If not you, then who? If not now, when?” - Hillel

One thing is for sure and that is we can never change the past. We can only change what is the present to hope for a better future. We can also learn from the experiences of others to not repeat their mistakes. Everything is connected, our choices, our actions, and our outcomes.
