Karma Series: The Law of Giving and Hospitality
The Law of Giving and Hospitality states that our behavior should match our thoughts and actions. That means that the things we do should align with the intentions we set behind them. This law provides a helpful understanding into the important dynamic of exchange through which this universe operates at the metaphysical level as well as how people interact at the physical level.
In order to understand this law, one must first understand the relationship between giving and receiving. It is the circulation of energy from one area to another that ensures the right level of balance and purpose. For example, offering your free time to volunteer is an act of giving to your community that is simultaneously receiving from you the necessary support to improve its overall infrastructure. This is creating balanced reciprocity where you have something to give in an area that is lacking. As the community continues to improve, so does your experience and overall quality of life. As a result of your efforts, you benefit as well.
“Giving is not just about making a donation. It is about making a difference.” Kathy Calvin
The act of giving is a very powerful tool we have in this physical world. All creatures are able to give in some form or another. Below are three important principles to keep in mind when following the law of giving and hospitality.
Give with positive intent. The intentions behind our giving is really important to keep in mind. Before giving anything always make sure that you are happy and open. We must not give from a place of force because that creates negative energy that people around you can easily pick up on. Remove all sense of scarcity or fear that you are losing by giving but rather focus on what you are gaining.
Giving with positive intent also means to give with no expectations to receive in return. This will surely lead to constant disappointment in yourself and in others. In doing so, you are also constricting the flow of dynamic exchange because the energy of scarcity and lack is taking up too much space for anything new to come into your life.
“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” Winston Churchill
Giving creates abundance. In order to manifest more into our lives we must first start with giving unconditionally. Being a giver sends the message to the universe that you are living in abundance. It also sends the message that you are grateful for all that you have received from the universe and that you are aligning yourself with the universal principles of giving as well. Through giving, you are telling the universe that you are grateful for all that you have received and want others to experience the same joy as you. Our willingness to give that which we seek keeps the abundance of the universe circulating in our lives.
“Only by giving are you able to receive more than you already have.” Jim Rohn
Be open to receiving. Giving and receiving are different aspects of the flow of energy in the universe, therefore the channels for giving and receiving must equally be open. Those who give and never receive will become depleted and those who receive and never give will become congested. Receiving also sends the message to the universe that you are welcoming of its gifts to you. Take for example the circulation of blood flow to your fingertips. If you tie a rubber band around your finger it will start to go blue and the longer you keep it there the higher your risk of damaging the tissues. If you stop the circulation of giving and receiving you are creating damage within your energetic force field preventing yourself from experiencing a healthy and balanced life.
“If you want something, give it.” Deepak Chopra
What to Give
The act of giving does not have to be material giving, it can also be non-tangible gifts such as time, attention, support, or advice. Many people fear giving because they feel they either do not have enough to give or or they are not worthy to give. This stems from a scarcity mindset. People fear rejection and therefore are afraid to have their offering be rejected. Many people are also afraid to be judged by what or how much they give. At the end of the day, the act of giving, no matter how small, is building the foundation for giving more in the future. This act is increasing the karmic energy by stimulating the rewarding feeling in your mind and attracting more of it because like attracts like.
Always be a giver. It is who you were meant to be.
