Karma Series: The Law of Here and Now
The Law of Here and Now states that we cannot be present if we are looking backward. This law emphasizes the importance of living in the present moment and being mindful of all that is occurring in the now. This is arguably the law on happiness.
Many of us fall victim to our thoughts. Some of us live in the past and some of us live in the future. Those of us who live in the past are constantly reenacting prior events trying to resolve something that we regret. Those of us who live in the future are in a constant state of anxiety wondering what our next steps should be. Neither of these states of mind are helpful in creating inner peace. Learning to live in the moment is a powerful skill that will allow you to experience greater happiness and quality of life.
“The purpose of life is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experiences.”― Eleanor Roosevelt
Echart Tolle is a prominent spiritual and thought leader in this space who authored a book The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment. Throughout his book, Tolle describes the seemingly endless suffering he experienced from depression and suicidal thoughts. He realized that his thoughts were taking over his life and if he wanted to regain control he would need to learn how to master his mind. The book also describes a specific method for living in the now, being fully present, and not succumbing to any thoughts that might arise. The goal is to detach from the ego which is the part of the mind that tries to control your thoughts and actions in order to develop inner peace.
“Realize deeply that the present moment is all you have. Make the NOW the primary focus of your life.”― Eckhart Tolle
How to Live Life in the Moment
One of the greatest joys in life is learning to live in the present moment. As Tolle cautions in his teachings, living either in the past or future takes you away from living altogether. Below are some examples of how to live life in the moment:
- Do things that bring you joy. Happiness is a state of mind and is also very addictive. This will also activate your creative mind and help you to generate new ideas for productive hobbies.
- Meditate to train your mind to not attach itself to any thoughts but rather let them go as easily as they come. You can also meditate in the form of reading a book in your favorite genre. Reading fiction novels is often compared to being in a meditative state because your mind is concentrating on a single action and tuning out all other distractions.
- Focus on the positive things in your life and practice gratitude every single day for all of your blessings.
- Create stronger relationships with positive people by asking them to spend time with you. We are social creatures, therefore establishing better relationships with people is critical to our happiness.
Overall, the benefits of living in the moment result in increased productivity, inner peace, having positive relationships with people, and living a more intentional life.
